Bay State Banner is first published.
September 25, 1965
Published by Melvin Miller, the newspaper serves Boston’s African-American community. Bryant Rollins is the first editor. Miller reportedly founded the paper after being told by Dr. Charles Steward, “You are the successor to The Guardian. If you don’t carry it on, our lives will have been worth nothing.” Financial difficulties force the paper to briefly suspend publication in 1966 and 2009. It is purchased by local television journalists Ron Mitchell and AndrĂ© Stark in 2023.
